Review: Frank Turner - Love, Ire And Song

Love, Ire & Song is more diverse than his debut album, with tracks ranging from the beautiful piano ballad ‘Jet Lag’, to the sing-along ‘Photosynthesis’ and the rocker ‘Imperfect Tense’. The opener, 'I Knew Prufrock Before he Got Famous' gets the album off to an upbeat start, and contains one of my favorite lyrics, one which sums up the album"ife is about love, last minutes and lost evenings, about fire in our bellies and about furtive little feelings".

Goodbye Schoolkids Records

Schoolkids Records, one of the two remaining independent music stores in Chapel Hill, closed down March 22, 2008. A free farewell show was held at Cat's Cradle on April 5th, featuring a lineup of great local bands.

• The ash remains of legendary Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain have gone missing from his widow's, Courtney Love, Los Angeles Residence. Love, known more for her addiction and rehab than for her own musical career, reported that Cobain's ashes were kept in a pink teddy-bear-shaped bag along with a lock of his hair. Thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and clothing were also missing. "I can't believe anyone would take Kurt's ashes from me," Love was quoted by News Of the World. "I find it disgusting and right now I'm suicidal." Kurt Cobain committed suicide with a shotgun while high on heroin in 1994. His ashes were scattered inside a Buddhist temple in New York, and some went into the Wishkah River near his home in Washington. The rest were left with Love. I'm not sure what is more disturbing here, the fact that someone stole Cobain's ashes or the fact that they were kept in a pink teddy bear. OK, so I guess it's not all that surprising that Courtney Love would keep them in such a strange container, but somehow it feels a little unfitting for the remains of someone who, many would argue, was one of the greatest rockers of all time. Regardless, it's sick and twisted that someone would do such a thing to Cobain's widow and daughter. #
• Rock n Roll's founding father Bo Diddley passed away in the early hours of this morning (June 2nd, 2008) at his home in Archer, Florida. He was 79. Born Ellas Bates in McComb, Mississippi in 1928 Diddley would shape rock and roll music forever. Bo Diddley's mainstream music career began in the 1950s with his break through record, "Bo Diddley," which introduced the world to his "shave and a haircut, two bits" rhythm. Despite his string of hits, Diddley claimed to never have cashed in on his popularity and trademark sound. he continued to tour up until his stroke in May of 2007, which left his speech impaired. he suffered a heart attack three months later. Diddley is survived by his brother The Reverend Kenneth Haynes of Biloxi, MS, his children, Evelyn Kelly, Ellas A. McDaniel, Tammi D. McDaniel and Terri Lynn Foster, as well as 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. A public funeral service will be held Saturday, June 7th at the Showers of Blessing Harvest Center in Gainesville, FL at 2:00PM. A memorial service featuring members of his touring band and guest musicians will follow at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Multi-Purpose Center, also in Gainesville, FL at 6PM. #
