Live: Man Man

Man man played Cats Cradle (Carrboro NC) Sunday, May 4 and set the place on fire with their wild carnival-esque show. Their tight percussion, hyperactive energy, and crisp songs were met with equal energy from a crowd that was in constant motion, jumping, dancing, yelling, singing, arms waving, feet moving. A Man Man concert isn’t just a music show, it’s an extravaganza, and full body experience. It’s what a live show is all about and the reason why we didn’t sit home and just listen to a CD instead.

Live: Will Hoge Captivates The Cradle

Nashville’s Will Hoge and his band of rock troubadours gave the fans at Cat’s Cradle a rocking night. The Cradle may have been less than packed, but those who were there seemed to be die hard fans, singing along with Hoge throughout the performance.

Live: Susan Tedeschi

I’m always excited when I hear that Susan Tedeschi is playing at the Cat’s Cradle. I will cancel almost any plans to get to see her in such a small venue. It allows you to see and hear her wonderful vocal and guitar skills, up close and personal. Her visit on April 16th was no exception.

Goodbye Schoolkids Records

Schoolkids Records, one of the two remaining independent music stores in Chapel Hill, closed down March 22, 2008. A free farewell show was held at Cat’s Cradle on April 5th, featuring a lineup of great local bands.

Live: Biffy Rocks The Cradle…

What can I say. There’s something about these guys that I love. Their latest album released in 2007, ‘Puzzle’, is stellar as are their previous records. Puzzle is a little more pop-ish, but still hits the mark beautifully. I’m not sure if anything can touch ‘Blackened Sky’ or ‘The Vertigo of Bliss’ as both of those previous records are pretty much faultless to my ears, but Puzzle is a top-notch album.

Live: Atlas Sound At Local 506

I’m always a bit apprehensive about what I’ll get when I go to a show with a band like Atlas Sound. It was the same concern I had before seeing Deerhunter, Bradford Cox’s other band. Both tend to have strong ambient leanings n their recordings and sometimes those don’t always play out well for a live audience. That wasn’t the case for Deerhunter, who would blast through their rock songs with enthusiasm, and it wasn’t the case with Atlas Sound.

Live: Fiery Furnaces

The Fiery Furnaces set the Cradle on fire last night (Jan 29 2008). While they were there supporting Super Furry Animals, they certainly could have been headlining themselves. They brought an energy and presence that was authentic and captivating. In a word, fantastic. I knew they would put on a wild show, and indeed it was everything I expected.
