Live: Fiery Furnaces

Fiery Furnaces

The Fiery Furnaces Set The Cradle On Fire

The Fiery Furnaces set the Cradle on fire last night (Jan 29 2008). While they were there supporting Super Furry Animals, they certainly could have been headlining themselves. They brought an energy and presence that was authentic and captivating. In a word, fantastic. I knew they would put on a wild show, and indeed it was everything I expected.

Matthew Friedberger sat behind his keyboards (an organ, synth and mini synth), turning knobs which brought layers of melody over the barbed vocals of his sister Eleanor, whose stage presence was hypnotic and was certainly the visual focal point of the show. The band sent out a more intimate vibe than is usual to most indie rock bands. The set was fantastic, drawing us in with the manic rhythm section, gorgeously crafted melodies, and unpredictable tempo changes. Eleanor has a brilliant stage presence. Did I already mention that? Well, it deserves repeating.

After last night’s performance I hold no reservations in recommending their live show and their latest CD, Widow City.
