The Super Furry Animals, the Welsh five-piece, are known for their shenanigans on stage, usually employing some sort of gimmick, arriving on a golf cart, wearing yeti costumes, giant projection screens, homemade Power Ranger helmets, gongs and the like. While these antics are entertaining and do add to the live experience, they certainly aren’t needed to sell their songs. I admit, I’d be somewhat disappointed if the Furries showed up in normal street cloths and never did anything quirky in their live show, but I’d still enjoy the music and come back for more. It’s always been the songs that sell the records, not the on stage antics.

The Furries played last night at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro NC to a less than full house. While we may not have been fighting for space and packed in like sardines, we all came with enough enthusiasm to make up for our smaller numbers. Those of us that came out for a Furries experience were treated to a 23 song set that included songs from many of their albums, a few B-Sides, and a run through of “The Man Don’t Give a Fuck”.

The show has a much more stripped down feel without all the gimmicks, leaving us with an unadorned stage with only the appearance of crew to swap guitars. They did wear goofy leather suits embroidered with SFA artwork, and frontman Gruff Rhys opens the show wearing a homemade Power Ranger helmet, but no memorable shenanigans. Most of the songs were pretty faithful to the CDs but some take on a different feel and energy when played live.
The crowd favorite was the archetypal Super Furry Animals song from Rings Around the World, “Receptacle for the Respectable”, complete with a carrot crunching Rhys. It has everything SFA fans love: a little bit of pop, rock, and electro all rolled into one, with a sprinkle of gimmick on top.
